Press RoomFind Your Place In The Universe OAKLAND (April 12, 2000) -- Opening this summer, the new Chabot Space & Science Center is looking for volunteers to help launch the $76 million, 86,000 square foot facility. Expecting an annual attendance of well over 250,000, CSSC has extensive volunteer programs and is recruiting now. To learn more about this fun volunteer experience, a special program explaining volunteer positions, requirements, training, etc. will be held on Monday evening, May 15th, 2000 from 6:30 pm to 8 pm at the former Chabot site located at 4917 Mountain Boulevard in Oakland. To reserve a seat please call 510-530-3480, ext.26. Volunteers may choose from a variety of exciting positions including Challenger Learning Center™ Flight Crewmembers to assist with simulated space flights, Exhibit Explorers to help facilitate discovery in the exhibit halls, Greeters to welcome people from around the world and orient them to CSSC’s many activities, and Classroom helpers for hands on exploration in state-of-the-art science or technology classroom. Volunteers are also needed to assist in the gift store, administrative office and with special events. So what does it take to join the CSSC team for the grand opening? Enthusiasm: As this center is sure to draw a variety of visitors, volunteers must enjoy interacting with audiences of all age groups and nationalities. A Love For Learning: Volunteers should also possess an interest in Astronomy and Science education, although no prior science background is required for most positions. Commitment: CSSC asks for a minimum of two 4-hour shifts, or a total of 8 hours a month, over a six months period. Orientation and free training is required of all volunteers, with weekend and evening class options available. Why will the new Science Center be an exciting place to be a volunteer? Marcia Hale, Volunteer Service Manager, answers with a big grin "Chabot Space & Science Center will be unlike any other facility on the Planet Earth. I know volunteers will be as excited as I am once they hear about everything we have planned. Plus the facility is so spectacular." As a volunteer at CSSC you may meet an astronaut, a senator, or a movie star along with many families enjoying the variety of programs and entertainment. It will be that kind of place. Want to know why volunteering is educational and fulfilling? Just ask current volunteers like Kim Cross, Antioch, medical center administrator: "my time commitment to Chabot is instrumental in my lifelong love of astronomy." Jansen Young, Piedmont, retiree -"I want to help make Chabot a model science center of the 21 century." Harry Smith, Oakland, fireman-"My flexible job lets me keep my interest in science." Michelle White, Walnut Creek, network administrator-"I really wanted to be an astronomer as a little girl, and I am so excited at the prospect of volunteering in the Challenger Learning Center."
