Seeds From Space Invade Oakland School! Grown As Best In California

OAKLAND (June 2, 2000)--The Star Station One program, designed to build awareness of the soon-to-be constructed International Space Station (ISS), has recently sponsored a national contest in which students and teachers were asked to grow tomato plants from seeds that were flown in space and given to schools for student research on growth possibilities.

The space station is the largest peacetime project in history with 16 countries currently contributing resources and hardware to the endeavor. To be completed in 2004, this giant earth-orbiting laboratory will provide a facility for discoveries in science, technology and medicine. NASA expects it will take up to 45 launches and hundreds of pieces to assemble the station over the next five years.

Chabot Space and Science Center has been chosen as one of the 62 museum partner sites for the Star Station One program. In the SEEDS II project, teachers and students were given an educational opportunity to compare growth results of "space-exposed" tomato seeds as a learning tool.

Webster Academy in East Oakland was one of the many California schools that participated in this program, and Chabot Space & Science Center entered their results in the state and national contest. They won first place in California!
