Press RoomMedia Contact: David Perry (415) 864-6397 Chabot Space & Science Center unveils
new 21 November 2000: Oakland, CA: In a ceremony today at Oakland’s Jefferson Elementary School (2035 40th Avenue), Chabot Space Science Center, in conjunction with the Oakland School District, launched a new program that benefits low-income fifth grade students and their families. The "Give Them the Universe" programs will distribute complimentary vouchers to more than 3,000 deserving East Bay families, for use at the popular new center in the Oakland Hills. The vouchers are worth almost $100 per family. "Chabot Space & Science Center is a great national treasure," said Chabot Executive Director Mike Reynolds. "We want to guarantee that families from all parts of Oakland are able to experience the learning and excitement. While thousands of Oakland students will be visiting Chabot, the 'Give Them the Universe' program reaches out to entire families." "Families can do much to support and spark their children's interest in science," says Oakland City Schools Superintendent Dennis Chaconas. "We feel this program will help." "Over the last hundred years, the original Chabot Observatory has inspired many Oakland students to successful careers," added Chabot Space & Science Center Board member Jean Quan. "We hope this program will continue to open a universe of opportunities for under-served young people." The new Chabot Space & Science Center is an innovative teaching and learning center focusing on astronomy and the inter-relationships of all the sciences. Its telescope and observatory complex, domed-screen wide-format film theater, planetarium, exhibits, and natural park setting are a place where students, teachers and the public can imagine, understand and learn to shape their future. The multi-million dollar facility opened to the public on August 19 of this year. For information and tickets, please call (510) 336-7300. www.chabotspace.org. "In this season of giving, we hope that our supporters will consider donations that will help us expand this program," said Bob Brauer, Chabot Space & Science Center Board President. Donations to support the new "Give Them the Universe" Program may be sent to the Chabot Space & Science Center, 10000 Skyline Blvd., Oakland 94619. ### | |||||||||||
