Chabot Space & Science Center Announces Innovative Relationship with Agilent Technologies

Oakland, California (January 8, 2001) -- Chabot Space & Science Center (CSSC) has announced that it will partner closely with Agilent Technologies Inc., a leading provider of innovative technologies for communications and life sciences, throughout the coming year. Agilent will share its successful business development and management practices with the non-profit Science Center, which is in its first year of operation at its new location in the Oakland Hills.

As part of Agilent's commitment to science education and employee involvement in the community, this innovative relationship includes a one-year loan of John (Tony) Lynch, one of the company's executives, to CSSC starting in January 2001. Lynch, who helped to secure a major equipment grant from Hewlett Packard for CSSC, has held numerous positions in sales and management during his 20-year-tenure with both HP and Agilent. Lynch will join CSSC's Board of Directors and will lead a new Strategic Alliance Program aimed at increasing major contributions and forging new industry partnerships.

The new Chabot Space & Science Center, which opened its new facilities in August 2000, is an innovative teaching and learning center focusing on astronomy, the space sciences, and the interrelationships of all the sciences. Located high in the Oakland hills, CSSC features an observatory with three telescopes, a planetarium, theater, exhibits, classroom laboratories and exhibits. CSSC encompasses more than 86,000 square feet dedicated to science education.

"CSSC is a place where students, teachers and the public can imagine, understand and learn to shape their future through science," said Lynch. "A major focus of CSSC is the education of school children, many coming from low-income and minority communities that are traditionally underrepresented in science and technology careers. This focus is closely aligned with Agilent's commitment to inspire interest in science and to encourage young people to pursue technical careers, so the innovative relationship between our two organizations makes good business sense."

The only facility of its kind in the world, CSSC is an Affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution and an Official Partner of the White House Millennium Council.

Agilent Technologies, based in Palo Alto, Calif., is a diversified technology company with approximately 47,000 employees serving customers in more than 120 countries. Agilent is a global leader in designing and manufacturing test, measurement and monitoring instruments, systems and solutions, and semiconductor and optical components. In fiscal year 2000, Agilent had net revenue of $10.8 billion. The company serves markets that include communications, electronics, life sciences and healthcare.
