Press RoomMedia Contact: David Perry, (415) 864-6397 Tour the Solar System in New Planet Trek Exhibit at Chabot Space & Science Center Oakland, CA, August 28, 2001 Take an up-close tour of the solar system at Chabot Space & Science Center's new permanent exhibit, Planet Trek. The interactive exhibit invites visitors to fly high-speed through the solar system, journeying from planet to planet, and moon to moon, through computer simulations controlled by the visitors. In the Planet Trek exhibit, travelers choose their destinations through touch screens that control their flight through space. Along the way, they are enveloped with the sights and sounds of the journey, with information and images displayed on the exhibit's three-walled projected environment. Space tourists are rewarded with history, trivia, and stunning 3-D renderings of planetary surfaces and environments. Planet Trek is an immersive interactive environment used to inspire and educate users about the many features of the planets and moons in our solar system. Visitors to Planet Trek can access a variety of comparison data, such as a person's weight and age on each of the planets, the planets' composition and visual distance from the sun, comparative temperatures, and exploration probe information. Planet Trek was created by Geoffrey Bruce, and designed in conjunction with the Exhibits Department at Chabot Space & Science Center. Chabot Space & Science Center is the continuation and expansion of the public Chabot Observatory that has served Bay Area schools and citizens with astronomy and science education programs for 117 years. The new Chabot Space & Science Center, which opened in August 2000, is an innovative teaching and learning center focusing on astronomy and the interrelationship of all the sciences. Its telescope and observatory complex, domed-screen Tien MegaDome Theater, Ask Jeeves Planetarium, exhibits and natural park setting are a place where students, teachers and the public can imagine, understand and learn to shape their future through science.
