Space Travel Gets Real at Chabot Space & Science Center

This document and all Chabot Space & Science Center news releases may be found online at www.chabotspace.org under Press room.

December 1, 2001 (Oakland, CA) — The marvels and mysteries of outer space come down to earth this month at Chabot Space & Science Center in Oakland, with a Star Wars film series in the Tien MegaDome Theater, and a "real-life" spaceship parked outside, on loan from NASA.

From December 13 through 16, future space travelers can begin to plan their maiden journey into space aboard Starship 2040, for destinations on the moon or a research station on Mars. The spacecraft is a walk-through mock-up of what a passenger spaceliner could look like in 40 years. By 2040, American spacecraft technology is anticipated to involve commercial, public space travel that will make such an out-of-this-world experience as routine as current air travel. At Chabot, visitors can walk into the spaceliner to tour the cockpit, passenger compartment, observatory, and engineering sections, all housed in a 48-foot tractor/trailer rig. A multimedia video theater outside gives travelers a taste of what to expect on their first tour of outer space. The exhibit, on loan from NASA and the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, also features education, lecture and special event components. For a preview, see www.starship2040.com

But why wait decades to experience the marvels of space travel? Let Luke Skywalker, C-3P0, R2-D2, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Yoda, Princess Leia, Queen Amidala, Darth Vader, and other galactic denizens lead you on a wondrous journey to a galaxy far, far away, as Chabot Space & Science Center presents George Lucas' epic Star Wars film adventures on the giant domed screen of the Tien Megadome Theater.

The screening schedule for the Star Wars film series is:

Saturday, December 15 - Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope
Saturday, December 22 - Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back
Saturday, December 29 - Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi
Saturday, January 5 - Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace

Ticket prices for each film are $8.75 for adults, and $6.50 for youth and seniors. Star Wars film screenings are at 3pm, 6pm & 9pm (with a 12 noon showing for Chabot members). Vouchers, member discounts, group rates, and free passes will not be accepted. (Members are advised to purchase tickets in advance for the noon shows; non-members may purchase any remaining same-day tickets.)

General Admission tickets are not required to attend these special shows. Due to this special event, there will be no regular MegaDome Theater shows on these Saturdays.

Chabot Space & Science Center is open Tuesday - Sunday, 10am - 5pm. General admission is $8.00, and $5.50 for seniors and children. Admission to the Planetarium and Theater is extra. Tickets may be purchased at the door, or by calling (510) 336-7373. Advance tickets are also available online at www.ticketweb.com.
