Holiday Celebrations Coming Up at Chabot Space & Science Center

"Once in a Boo Moon" Halloween, October 31, 6pm–9pm

Telescope Buyers Workshop, November 9, 1pm–6pm

"Thank You to the Citizens of Oakland" and Veteran's Tribute, November 10–11

11 October 2002 — Oakland, CA: Spooky science comes to life on Halloween at Chabot Space & Science Center in Oakland, with "Once in a Boo Moon" Halloween party for children on Thursday, October 31. The 2nd annual Halloween evening party includes a planetarium show, cartoons in the Tien MegaDome Theater, exhibit viewing, hands-on spooky science activities, Discovery Lab play for younger children, and a Halloween treat bag. Children must be accompanied by an adult, and adults must be accompanied by a child. Everyone is encouraged to wear costumes. Tickets for the Halloween night events are $10 ($8 for Chabot members). Advance tickets are recommended, and may be purchased at ticketweb.com or at the Chabot Box Office, (510) 336-7373.

To build up the Halloween spirit, from October 18–31, Chabot's Ask Jeeves Planetarium will feature Count Astro's Haunted Heavens, Tuesdays through Thursdays at 1pm; and Fridays at 1pm and 3pm. Count Astro leads a journey in the "planescarium" to visit various creepy critters in our skies in this 20-minute Halloween-themed show (free with paid General Admission).

Eyes to the Skies: Telescope Buyers Workshop, November 9

Especially for first-time buyers of telescopes, and just in time for the holidays, Chabot Space & Science Center will host an afternoon of telescope workshops on Saturday, November 9, from 1pm to 6pm geared towards the novice. The series of 20-minute rotating workshops will detail the different types of telescopes and binoculars, how to use them, accessories, astrophotography, CCD imaging and observing the Moon. The afternoon will culminate in a 30-minute overview from 5:30–6pm in the Tien MegaDome Theater, moderated by Dr. Mike Reynolds. Telescopes from Meade Instruments and other vendors will be set up on-site, and will be available for purchase in the Starry Nights Gift Store. This is the first in what will be an annual November telescope event at Chabot — just in time for the Leonids meteor shower later in the month! Tickets are $15 Non-members/ $10 Chabot Members / $5 Youth (12 and under) and include General Admission to the Science Center. "Thank You to the Citizens of Oakland" and Veteran's Tribute, November 10–11

Chabot Space & Science Center shows its appreciation to the citizens of Oakland with a program of special Veteran's Day weekend events. On Sunday, November 10, and Monday, November 11, Chabot will be open to the public from 10am to 5pm, with free General Admission offered to Oakland residents (General Admission for non-residents is $8 for adults, and $5.50 for seniors and for children ages 12 and under). Oakland residents will also enjoy free parking and discounts on admission to shows in the Ask Jeeves Planetarium and Tien MegaDome Theater. Other special events will include Discovery Lab activities for children ages 4 to 7 and hands-on "Human Body Spotlight" science activities. Residents must present a form of ID (driver's license or other ID card) at the door. On Monday, November 11, as a tribute to Veterans, Chabot will offer a discount General Admission of $5.00 to Veterans. 

Chabot's historic telescopes will be open to the public, with Solar sunspot viewing (weather permitting). Chabot's Celestial Cafe and Starry Nights gift shop will be open, and there will be a display and sale of telescopes.

Visitors can explore the past, present and future of spaceflight in the current exhibit Spaceflight: Journey to the Stars, organized by Chabot Space & Science Center and NASA, where they can climb into a space capsule, take a tour of the Solar System, land a lunar module on the Moon, feel what it's like to wear astronaut gloves, and dig for "moon" rocks. Included in the exhibit are real spacesuits and NASA models of rockets and spacecraft. 

Featured shows in the Ask Jeeves Planetarium include the kid-based Legends of the Night Sky, a cartoon-like tale of story of the constellations Perseus and Andromeda, narrated by Aesop, the 3000-year-old owl.

Screenings in the Tien MegaDome theater include The Human Body, the incredible story of human life in astonishing detail; The Living Sea, an action-packed journey to the depths of the oceans; Mysteries of Egypt; and To Be An Astronaut.

Chabot Space & Science Center is located at 10000 Skyline Blvd. in Oakland's Joaquin Miller Park. General admission to the Center galleries is $8.00/$5.50 seniors and children (with an additional charge for shows in the Planetarium and MegaDome Theater). Children under 3 are admitted free; Students with ID receive a $1.00 discount. General admission to the galleries is FREE on the first Wednesday of each month (with an additional charge for Planetarium and Theater).
