200 hours required/$2000 stipend

General Description

Applications are currently being accepted for fall/winter college internship positions at Chabot Space & Science Center in Oakland. Please submit a completed application, cover letter and resume. Applications are available online at application. This internship focuses on environmental education and maintenance of Chabot’s recycling, composting and gardening programs. Education topics include science education, outdoor/local ecology hikes, environmental science, waste management and recycling practices. Preferred background for applicants includes those majoring in Conservation and Resource Studies, Ecology, Primary or Secondary Education, Environmental Studies/Sciences, Geography, or a related major. However, all applicants will be considered. Applicants should have a strong interest in environmental topics and be comfortable speaking and leading activities for large and small groups of people. Highlights of the internship include the following:

  • Raise awareness about waste reduction and recycling through leading interactive and engaging “Zero Waste Lunch” programs
  • Educate students and general public visitors about local ecology, the environment, and waste reduction/diversion during weekday class fieldtrip visits and weekend public demonstrations
  • Attend enrichment and training sessions focused on science education and current waste management practices and technology
  • Visit recycling centers, reuse businesses, transfer stations, landfills, and other related sites
  • Take responsibility for Chabot’s recycling program, including collection of reusable and recyclable materials and maintenance of yard waste and worm composting systems
  • Opportunity to work alongside experienced science educators
