Science Saturday Workshops

 

A series of Saturday workshops designed to inspire and encourage girls to explore fun hands-on science activities.

Four workshops, each lasting three Saturdays.
10am - 1pm
       

  • Create circuits and learn to solder
  • Learn digital storytelling
  • Build "green" model homes
  • Work on internal combustion engines

The series is open to all girls in 6th through 8th grades. 

Workshops include 9 hours of fun instruction (over three Saturdays), a take home piece appropriate to the workshop and General Admission to Chabot Space & Science Center.

Take all four and save $60 when you sign up for the series!
Space will be limited to 20 girls per workshop.

Circuitry and Soldering

Saturdays, January 26, February 2 & 9
10am - 1pm

$165/$150 Members

Introduction to the basic building blocks of electricity and electronics, growing into using electronic lab boxes to design and prototype simple circuits. Girls will complete two LED based take-home projects.

Digital Photography

Saturdays, February 16, 23, & March 1
10am - 1pm

$165/$150 Members

Go beyond "point and shoot" knowledge of cameras. Learn the technology behind digital media. Use the features of a digital camera to tell stories and explore the different career options available in the field of media and engineering. Girls will master the art of digital storytelling in the most current formats.

Green Dollhouse

Saturdays, March 15, 22, & 29
10am - 1pm

$165/$150 Members

Construct your own dream studio from start to finish. Brainstorm an idea and create a digital floor plan, then build it with genuine green resources. Go beyond "reduce, reuse and recycle" to learn about sustainable green materials; everyday items that can be used in new, novel and Earth-friendly ways. From planning to construction, explore and reflect on energy usage in your home. By using native and low-water plants you'll explore ways to lessen your environmental impact, yet still create something functional and beautiful. Girls will make a green dollhouse studio to take home.

Cars and Engines

Saturdays, May 3, 10 & 17
10am - 1pm

$165/$150 Members

Learn about a four-stroke engine and upkeep for your family vehicle while you explore the different fields of engineering needed to design and build automobiles. In the hands-on labs, you will build a model four-stroke engine, perform basic car maintenance and engineer a lawnmower engine. Take home the "Motor Works" book.
