POLAR-PALOOZA
IS COMING TO THE BAY AREA!

October 26 - 28, 2007

WHAT: Polar-Palooza is three days of exciting family-friendly programs, "cool" multimedia presentations, the most up-to-date research from the Arctic and Antarctic, teacher workshops, and much more!

WHO: Six of the world's leading climate scientists working at the ends of the Earth, along with staff of Chabot Space & Science Center and Lawrence Hall of Science.

  • Michael Castellini: University of Alaska, Fairbanks

  • Ralph Harvey: Antarctic Search for Meteorites (ANSMET)

  • Orville Huntington: Wildlife biologist, hunter, community leader from remote Anthabascan community of Huslia

  • Kathy Licht: Indiana University-Purdue University

  • Darlene Lim: NASA Ames Research Center and SETI Institute

  • Donal Manahan: University of Southern California

WHEN & WHERE:

FRIDAY OCTOBER 26
Field Trip to the Poles
10:30am & 12:00pm
Lawrence Hall of Science, Centennial Drive, Berkeley

Pre-registered school groups will hear about new scientific research from Earth’s polar regions and learn about the people, wildlife and history of these extreme environments. Students will see what is happening to glaciers, oceans and sea-ice and find out what the scientists’ research reveals about Earth’s climate: past, present and future. Learn why climate change is felt first and most dramatically at the poles, and how polar changes impact temperate zones – including the Bay Area.

Reservations required. Call 510.6425134 for reservations and more information.

SATURDAY OCTOBER 27
Polar Palooza Educator Workshop    9:00am - 12:00pm
Chabot Space & Science Center, 10000 Skyline Blvd, Oakland

Interested teachers should attend this workshop that will help them bring the science of the polar regions into their classrooms. The workshop will be co-facilitated by polar scientists and an educator presenting “ready-to-use” inquiry-based, hands-on activities, lesson plans and more.

For more information, email polarpalooza@chabotspace.org.

Pre-registration required (fee of $10). To register, please download the registration form and FAX to 510.336.7491 or mail to "Chabot Space & Science Center, Polar Palooza Workshop."

Stories From a Changing Planet    1:00pm & 3:00pm
Chabot Space & Science Center, 10000 Skyline Blvd, Oakland

This “polar performance" will combine new scientific research from Earth’s polar regions with compelling stories about the people, wildlife and history of these extreme environments. Immersive sound-scapes, stunning imagery, and real polar artifacts come together to profile the geologic history of Earth and showcase the journeys of six leading polar scientists, just back from the Arctic and Antarctic. See what is happening to glaciers, oceans and sea-ice and find out what the scientists’ research reveals about Earth’s climate: past, present and future. Learn why climate change is felt first and most dramatically at the poles, and how polar changes impact temperate zones – including the Bay Area.  Free with general admission.

Reservations suggested, call 510.3367373

SUNDAY OCTOBER 28
Meet the Scientists    12:00 pm -
1:30pm
Chabot Space & Science Center, 10000 Skyline Blvd, Oakland

Bring your questions about living and working at the Poles for a more informal opportunity to meet scientists Darlene Lim and Michael CastelliniFree with general admission.

Stories From a Changing Planet    2:00pm - 3:00pm
