Director of Education

Chabot Space & Science Center is a deeply loved and cherished community-based institution, located on a stunning campus nestled amongst the redwoods in the Oakland Hills. For over I35 years, Chabot has inspired adults and kids of all ages through educational programs, interactive exhibits, artifacts and Planetarium shows that teach and inspire about the Universe and Planet Earth.  Now, Chabot Space & Science Center is experiencing an exciting time of growth and development as it embarks on a bold new vision to re-imagine the role of a science center.  We are launching innovative new educational programs, connecting learning across a wide variety of environments and settings in ways that break conventional boundaries and exploring new ways of including more diverse audiences.

Chabot has an extraordinary and dedicated Staff that is as energized as they are passionate about our mission of science education.   We are looking for an educational thought-leader to join our team and play an important leadership role in a fast-paced, highly collaborative and creative environment.


The Director of Education is responsible for the overall direction, development and implementation of Chabot’s educational strategy and programs.  Working closely with the Executive Director and Senior Staff, the Director of Education provides the visionary leadership necessary to maximize Chabot’s impact as an increasingly innovative and forward-looking educational institution.  The Director of Education is a Senior-level position reporting directly to the Executive Director.



Educational Programs

  • Provide leadership in developing and fulfilling Chabot’s educational vision.
  • Steward an educational approach that is core to all Chabot educational offerings.
  • Oversee Chabot’s educational programming initiatives, including but not limited to hosting field trips, Challenger Learning Center, workshops, youth and teacher professional development programs, camps, after-school programs, off-site programs and on-floor activities.
  • Collaborate closely with the Director of Visitor Experience in the development and implementation of Chabot’s exhibits, on-floor learning experiences and public programs.
  • Maintain involvement with professional associations and activities to stay current with best practices and developments in education.
  • Identify innovative educational opportunities for Chabot.


  • Identify and review potential grant opportunities in close collaboration with Executive Director and Director of Institutional Advancement.
  • Play a leadership role in the development of educational grant proposals.
  • Maintain and cultivate positive donor relations.
  • Write or oversee preparation of programmatic grant reports.
  • Monitor grant-funded educational programming and educational planning initiatives to ensure that they fulfill grant requirements.


  • Build and deepen educational partnerships with external institutions, government agencies and community groups, including k-12 schools, major research labs, post-secondary, and community-based organizations throughout the region.
  • Work with local organizations to develop and implement community programs.
  • Represent the organization to partner agencies, organizations, and the general public. Attend events and programs as a representative of Chabot.

Department Management

  • Lead a team of educators, education team-specific volunteers and external collaborators.
  • Cultivate a culture of collaboration and teamwork within the Education department and across the institution.
  • Set and manage the Education department budget; work closely with Program Managers to provide income/expense reports for all programs within the Education department.
  • Prepare and deliver reports on departmental activities to Staff and Board.
  • Develop departmental staffing plan and lead recruiting, hiring, training and review of Education department staff.
  • Foster a culture of experimentation, learning and creativity that attracts, inspires and motivates a diverse, well-qualified staff.



  • BS/BA degree in education, science, mathematics, arts or related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in museum education or related formal/informal learning institution experience, including at least 3 years in a senior level management position.
  • Experience developing and implementing innovative educational programs.
  • Knowledge of inquiry-rich, constructivist-based educational pedagogies.
  • Deep understanding of how to build, support and inspire creative cultures.
  • Deep understanding of how to manage, motivate, and lead people toward success.
  • Highly collaborative, strong team player (both internally and externally)
  • Knowledge of promising educational practices in science centers, children’s museums and/or other informal learning institutions.
  • Experience developing and managing department-level budgets.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and highly effective interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to organize time effectively, set priorities and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Independent, self-directed learner.
  • Creative problem-solver and associative thinker.
  • Proven ability to work independently as well as within a team environment.
  • Strong curiosity and passion for learning, with an excitement for new challenges.
  • Flexible and team oriented.
  • Willingness to travel, work nights and weekends as required.
