ABOUT CHABOT SPACE & SCIENCE CENTER

POSITION IMPACT

Chabot Space & Science Center is seeking an Exhibit Developer to join our experience studio, a multidisciplinary team leading the creative direction of Chabot’s experiences, in the Center, community, and online. This is an opportunity for a highly motivated, creative individual to join the team. The Exhibit Developer’s responsibilities include: exhibit installation/de-installation, maintenance, and collaboration with exhibit developers and designers on design research, prototyping, and fabrication. The successful candidate will be able to work independently and as part of a team, and will bring flexibility, dedication, and attention to detail to the tasks of keeping Chabot’s exhibits running at full capacity, working collaboratively to improve the quality, function, and technology in existing exhibits, and contributing to the creative development of new exhibits and programs.

 

KEY PRIORITIES
  • Develop, design, and build exhibits.
  • Create final versions of exhibits by fabricating mechanisms, wiring, and building objects and exhibit furnishings.
  • Configure and support visitor-facing computer and AV equipment (primarily Windows OS)
  • Knowledge of uses and fabrication techniques of wood, plastics, metals and paints.
  • Experience with SketchUp Pro, Fusion 360, or other similar design software. Ability to produce dimensioned drawings and renderings to convey ideas to internal teams and external vendors.
  • Experience with 3D filament and 3D resin printers, laser cutters, and vinyl cutters.
  • Experience with safe installation of public facing exhibits and interactives. Knowledge of accessibility guidelines for museums is preferred.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Work in a collaborative process with Chabot staff and outside consultants to create exhibits
  • Research exhibit content and develop conceptual organization and narratives
  • Conceive, develop, design, and prototype interactive exhibits
  • Contribute to the evaluation, redesign, modification, and rebuilding of existing exhibit
  • Manage individual exhibit projects including schedules, budget, and fabrication production
  • Other departmental duties as needed

 

SKILLS AND PRIORITIES
  • High-level exhibit development and design skills that demonstrate creativity and innovation. A well-developed understanding of issues affecting content, usability, durability, and practicality of interactive exhibits.
  • Excellent presentation, communication, and writing skills.
  • Excellent sketching, drawing, drafting, and computer graphics/CAD skills; Vectorworks, Photoshop, Illustrator
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Basic shop skills
  • Knowledgeable about fabrication materials and processes, audio-visual software and hardware, and mechanical interactive as applicable to exhibit development and design
  • Commits to value and contribute to an inclusive working and learning environment at Chabot Space & Science Center in workplace culture, content and program development, hiring practices and Center experience.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • 2-3 years of experience developing exhibits, experiential environments, or related creative work.

Reports to the Creative Director

SCHEDULE/ AVAILABILITY

Position Type: Full Time, Fixed 2-year position. Expected Hours of Work: 40

SALARY/ BENEFITS

Salary Range: $50-65k/year

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to operate shop equipment, sit and stand for long periods of time, and move items up to 50 lbs
