On-Call Visitor Services Associate

Chabot Space & Science Center is extremely proud of its reputation as one of Northern California’s leading centers for informal science education.

Chabot Space and Science Center seeks an outgoing, customer service-oriented individuals to join its front-line staff to help at the Box Office, Gift Shop, and Cafe in an on-call capacity.


On-Call Visitor Services Associate Job Summary:

This front-line position is responsible for creating a welcoming experience for our guests from the moment they walk in the front door. The ideal candidate is an excellent problem solver and communicator, is collaborative and able to multi-task.

The Visitor Services Associate is expected to demonstrate excellent customer service and professionalism when interacting with guests, staff, and volunteers.

This is an on-call position. The variable schedule includes weekends, evenings, and holidays. The schedule is created a month ahead, but last-minute staffing needs may also arise and be requested.

Essential Functions

Essential functions of this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Box Office/Gift Shop/Café sales.
  • Point of sales operation.
  • Planetarium show ushering and operation.
  • Special events support.


  • Greet and welcome visitors to the Center, answer questions, and assist visitors with planning their visit
  • Accurately and efficiently complete cash and credit card sales of tickets, memberships, merchandise, and food
  • Promote Membership and Public Programs
  • Answer general phone line and emails
  • Greet and check-in groups for programs and other event arrivals
  • Address any problems that may arise with visitors
  • Monitor public areas for safety concerns and cleanliness
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of all Chabot programs
  • Maintain the appearance of box office and front-of-house areas
  • Usher and serve as planetarium operator for assigned programs
  • Communicate and collaborate with overall Chabot Staff as well as Visitor Services Team
  • Provide input to improve the overall visitor experience
  • Perform light clerical duties and other duties as assigned
  • Administer exit surveys for data collection
  • Follow all Chabot safety regulations
  • Light cleaning (depending on assigned role)


  • Interest in science education and/or museums.
  • Point of Sale systems knowledge and experience.
  • Ability to accurately complete routine administrative paperwork.
  • Willingness to speak with the public.
  • Honesty, reliability, and integrity.
  • Excellent spoken and written communications skills.



  • Fluency in English, bilingual is a plus.
  • Food service certification recommended (but will be provided if not already in possession)

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED; some college is preferred.
  • Experience with cash handling and customer service.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to stand and/or walk for long periods of time and lift up to 30 pounds.

This is a On-Call non-exempt position. Weekends are needed as well as availability to work holidays and evenings.

Salary Range: $21 hr.
