Overnight Host—On Call

Nestled in the Oakland Hills, Chabot Space & Science Center was founded as an observatory in 1883. Today Chabot offers visitors the very latest in hands-on, interactive exhibits, displays, and Planetarium shows that explore the mysteries of the universe and of life here on earth. Position Summary:

As a member of the Visitor Experience department, overnight host(s) are responsible for guiding overnight groups through a pre-scheduled program itinerary, ensuring safety, and providing excellent customer service. Some programs require the delivery of hands-on programming in conjunction with other Chabot educators. Other work responsibilities include mealtime support, running pre-recorded planetarium shows and other logistics. Groups can range in size from 50-200 in attendance, with larger events require more than one host. The overnight groups can range from scout groups to families and/or adults.


The ideal candidate will be able to work a flexible schedule on nights and/or weekends. Customer service is essential in this role. Hosts must be able to work with children, youth, adults and group leaders from diverse audiences. An interest in space, astronomy, or education is a plus. Typical shifts are 3pm-10:30am. There will be up to 30 events per year for the pool of on-call hosts to choose from.  Compensation is a flat fee of $250 per event. On site security will be present during the events.

The overnight host(s) will work closely with a content delivery team of educators, astronomers, and members of the East Bay Astronomical Society. Occasionally half shifts are available for either morning or evening at a reduce rate of $125.



  • Implement overnight programs: schedule within museum systems and calendars and collaborate with the program manager.
  • Actively promote the use of Chabot Space & Science Center facility as the go-to place for overnights.
  • Implement overnight events which includes responsibility over safety in coordination with security team members, some program delivery and the overall visitor experience of guests.
  • Responds promptly to attendee needs.
  • Is proactive in ensuring the best possible visitor experience.
  • Provides on-going communication to other team members and supervisor on needs, opportunities or feedback from visitors.
  • Reports emergencies and other issues that may arise during events.
  • Enters schedule via online systems.
  • Attends trainings and agrees to background checks.
  • Supports the delivery of meal periods.
  • Runs preprogrammed planetarium shows.
  • Learns some of the basic program delivery for emergency backup.
  • Follows all CSSC safety regulations.
  • Supports setup/breakdown of the overnight.
  • Other assigned duties as necessary



  • High school diploma, some college
  • Experience with supervising youth groups or in a museum, park, camp, community center or informal education environment
  • Prior work with or interest in reaching communities underrepresented in science and museum settings
  • Conversant in a language other than English highly desired
  • Demonstrated organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in team structures
  • Comfortable with public speaking
  • Willingness to have a flexible schedule. This position requires working nights and weekends
