Nestled in the Oakland Hills, Chabot Space & Science Center was founded as an observatory in 1883. Today Chabot offers visitors the very latest in hands-on, interactive exhibits, displays, and Planetarium shows that explore the mysteries of the universe and of life here on earth. Chabot Space & Science Center is extremely proud of its reputation as one of Northern California’s leading centers for informal science education.

Position Summary

Chabot Space & Science Center seeks candidates for the role of Science Educator Intern, a member of the Instructional Team in the Education Department. Education Interns are responsible for facilitating learning experiences for K-12 students and teachers. All programs focus on a learner-centered and inquiry-based approach to learning with an emphasis on open-ended experiences. Educators teach and facilitate on-site field trip workshops and summer camp programs, as well as present large group demonstrations, and support off-site events at schools and community venues. Workshops and programs range from 1-6 hours in length.

Key Responsibilities

For field trip workshops and summer camp:

○ Facilitate classroom and museum floor learning experiences for K-12 students around science learning and inquiry-based experiences

○ Plan and prepare all materials

○ Maintain classroom spaces

○ Modify experiences to fit the needs of the specific group as needed

○ Contribute to the ongoing content development

 

As a member of the Education Instructional Team:

○ Work with Visitor Experience to provide educational content and approach to upcoming programs and events

○ Carry out your share of administrative and logistical tasks

○ Participate in team meetings and strategic planning activities

○ Assist in developing new learning experiences

○ Reflect and provide feedback on programs

Other roles:

○ Support outreach and school partnerships events on and off site

○ Assist with large group presentations and demonstrations

○ Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Passionate interest in science education
  • Strong team player, able to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Skilled at teaching audiences with diverse backgrounds, both adults and students
  • Knowledge of pedagogical strategies and best practices
  • Familiarity with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) preferred
  • Some knowledge of scientific concepts of life sciences, earth sciences, and physical sciences
  • Flexible and able to multitask
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to speak effectively in front of groups
  • Excellent interpersonal skills

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, sit, walk, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear. Employee must be able to lift, carry and pull up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to work some Saturdays and evenings required and will be scheduled well in advance.
  • Ability to work one to two Saturdays per month a plus
  • Travel to offsite locations for program presentations and events at schools or community locations
  • Follow all Chabot safety regulations
