Summer Camp Counselor

This summer, at Explorers Camp at Chabot Space & Science Center, we will offer three different thematic science camps over five weeks: Camp Create, Space Camp, and Science Superheroes Camp. Campers will explore alongside Chabot Science Educators and cap counselors inside our science labs and museum spaces, and outdoors in Redwood Regional Park. Our summer camps are designed to be active, highly engaging, and are tailored to students entering 1st-6th grades. Join us for week-long, thematic camps and become an innovative, creative, and confident problem-solver through immersive, hands-on science experiences! The camp serves approximately 360 elementary students throughout the summer.

Chabot Space & Science Center is seeking several enthusiastic Camp Counselors to support the weekly science teaching, outdoor learning, and daily functioning of the Summer Camp program. The hourly rate of pay for this position will be $18.50/hour. This is an exciting opportunity to join our dynamic  group of educators to build, create, tinker, and play all summer long. Key Responsibilities

  • Work with Chabot’s Education Team to lead weekly themed summer camps
    • Lead hands-on science activities in classrooms and museum spaces
    • Lead outdoor activities, games, and nature walks
    • Manage before and after care spaces and activities for campers
    • Serve as role model and assist your group of up to 18 campers in grades 1-6
    • Set up and clean up appropriate classroom learning environments
    • Work collaboratively with other staff and volunteers to ensure outstanding visitor experiences
  • Be available every weekday from Monday, June 10 – Wednesday, July 31, 2019 (not including July 1-5):
    • 1 week of camp training, June 10-14
    • 5 weeks of camp instruction and before/after care, June 17 –  July 26 (no camp July 1-5)
    • 3 days of clean-up/wrap-up, July 29-31
    • Shifts vary depending on which counselor role you are hired for:
      • Shift A: 7:45am – 2:45pm
      • Shift B: 12:30pm-4:15pm
      • Shift C: 12:30pm-6pm

Qualifications

  • Skills and abilities:
    • Must love working with kids and be flexible, energetic, enthusiastic, and patient
    • Must have experience working with elementary-aged students
    • Comfortable working outdoors on trails and in the nearby regional park
    • Comfortable leading games, activities, and hands-on science lessons for groups of 18 students in grades 1-6
    • Excellent classroom management, communication and facilitation skills
    • Excellent interpersonal skills
    • Responsible, and punctual
    • Ability to collaborate with Camp Director, Chabot staff, Camp Counselors and adult and teen volunteers to create a highly engaging and memorable experience for youth participants
    • Ability to hike on trails and lift/carry up to 20 pounds
    • Interest in teaching STEM subjects in a fun, engaging and dynamic camp environment
  • Preferred qualifications:
    • Previous experience serving as a camp counselor or similar role
    • Science background and knowledge of various science content areas
    • Knowledge of science education best practices
    • Ability to speak Spanish or Mandarin a plus.
    • Undergraduate degree
