Stanford University’s Student Space Initiative (SSI) is one of the university’s largest engineering groups. Last fall, their Mars BRICs Team won the NASA Student Payload Opportunity with Citizen Science, or SPOCS, competition. With this win, they will send an experimental payload onboard the International Space Station, conducting research with an emphasis on sustainability. The research will investigate a newly developed brick formation process that would help us build radiation-blocking homes on Mars.

Members from the team will discuss more about this out-of-this-world research and will lead workshop participants through a fun hands-on activity demonstrating how the ingredients used to make bricks impact their strength and structure. Kids will have the opportunity to make multiple bricks of varying strengths and break them with their hands to feel the difference.
