Field Trip Workshops and Add-Ons
Workshops
Wonders of Weather
Grades: K-3
Meteorologists study and measure the weather! Through crafts, experiments, and scientific tools, students will become meteorologists-in-training, exploring different kinds of weather and what drives these differences on our planet. Come find out how the Sun, air, and water work together to create all the different types of weather we see.
NGSS: K-LS1-1, K-ESS2-1, K-ESS3-1, K-ESS3-2, 2-PS1-4, 2-ESS2-3
Moon, Sun & Us
Grades: K-5
Through this workshop, students will be introduced to the two astronomical objects that are most significant in their lives, the sun and the moon, along with a deeper understanding of our own planets’ special features and how all three act together.
NGSS: 1-ESS1-1, 4-PS3-1, 4-PS3-2, 4-PS3-3, 5-PS2-1, 5-ESS1-1, 5-ESS2-1
Sun, Earth & Moon
Grades: 4-8
The Sun, Earth, and Moon are some of the first things we learn about space, but a lot ends up forgotten about these familiar celestial bodies. In this workshop, students will learn about the Sun, Earth, and Moon not as independent objects, but parts of a system. Debunk some of the most common misconceptions about these objects and explore the truth through models, demonstrations, and hands-on activities.
NGSS: 5-PS2-1, 5-ESS1-1, 5-ESS2-1, MS-PS2-4, MS-ESS-1, MS-ESS-2, MS-ESS-3
Mars Lander Challenge
Grades: 4-8
Perseverance, NASA’s most recent Mars rover, was deployed in February 2021: but how did it successfully arrive? And what is next for Mars exploration? Come build your own lander to keep our rovers safe on their journeys. In this workshop, young engineers will be briefed on the challenges of landing science instruments on Mars. Then, they will take on the task of designing a Mars lander, testing it, and testing again, to see if it can successfully tackle the Red Planet.
NGSS: 3-5-ETS1-1, 3-5-ETS1-2, 3-5-ETS1-3, MS-ETS1-2, MS-ETS1-3, MS-ETS1-4
Energy Engineering
Grades: 4-8
Nowadays, humans need a lot of energy to power things like cars, buses, lights, phones, and even rockets! Where does all of our energy come from? How do different types of energy influence life on our planet? In this workshop students will learn about different sources of energy and evaluate various considerations and impacts of their large-scale usage. Next, they will partake in an engineering challenge where they will design, test, and redesign wind turbine models to try and produce as much energy as they can.
NGSS: 3-5-ETS1-1, 3-5-ETS1-2, 3-5-ETS1-3, MS-ETS1-2, MS-ETS1-3, MS-ETS1-4
Living Worlds
Grades: 5-8
Have you ever wondered how life came to exist? What about what life might look like on other planets? Explore the marvels of the only known life in space, found right here on our home planet. Students will learn how life evolved here on Earth, and how scientists use that knowledge to explore the possibilities of extraterrestrial life, all while connecting back to what we notice and appreciate about the natural world.
NGSS: 4-LS1-2, 4-LS1-1, 5-LS1-1, 5-ESS1-1, MS-LS1-1, MS-LS1-5, MS-LS4-1
