  • Space, Connection & Curiosity: Intergenerational Learning and Third Places

In a world increasingly shaped by screens, algorithms, and isolation, building real-world community and curiosity across generations has never been more vital. At Chabot Space & Science Center, we believe that learning is a shared journey. And the spaces where that journey unfolds are just as important as the lessons themselves.

As we prepare to launch Space Week, a five-day celebration of discovery and imagination from July 30–August 3, we invite you to see Chabot not just as a museum, but as a third place and a hub for intergenerational learning.

    Why Intergenerational Learning Matters

When people of all ages come together to learn, something magical happens. Elders pass down stories and wisdom while younger generations spark innovation and curiosity. Together, they build bridges of empathy, creativity, and respect.

Intergenerational learning isn’t confined to classrooms. It’s sparked during telescope viewings with a retired engineer and a curious 10-year-old. It’s built during a Family Nature Adventures workshop where grandparents and grandchildren design Mars habitats side-by-side. At Chabot, these moments aren’t rare; they’re intentional.

What’s a “Third Place” and Why Do We Need It?

Sociologist Ray Oldenburg coined the term “third place” to describe community hubs beyond home (first place) and work (second place). These are spaces where connection flourishes organically. Places where you want to be, not where you have to be.

In our modern world, third places are essential. They offer connection in a time of loneliness, creativity in a world of uncertainty, and wonder in a society often moving too fast to look up at the stars.

Chabot is proud to be Oakland’s place for space, but also Oakland’s space for community. Whether you’re coming for a quiet evening of stargazing, a family outting, or a lively First Friday event, you’re entering a third place designed to inspire and connect.

Enter Space Week: A Celebration of the new Space Age for All Ages

This year’s Space Week is an invitation to explore the new Space Age together. It’s a joyful, hands-on celebration of science, art, technology, and (most importantly) connection. Here’s how you can join us:

    Family Adventures in Space (July 30–Aug 1 | 10AM–5PM)

Designed for school-age kids and their adult companions, these three days are packed with fun and learning. Build rovers, launch rockets, train like an astronaut, and earn mission stamps to win prizes. A perfect way for caregivers and kids to explore space (and each other’s curiosity) together.

    First Friday: CosmoCon (Aug 1 | 6PM–10PM)

Step into a cosmic future with storytelling, Star Trek improv, cocktail-making robots, and a planetarium show narrated by Lupita Nyong’o. Whether you’re a Trekkie, a sci-fi dreamer, or just in it for the costume contest, CosmoCon is your launchpad for community and imagination. Sign up for our Costume Contest here.

BLAST OFF! Weekend Festival (Aug 2–3 | 10AM–5PM)

Meet real astronauts. Hold rocket parts. Launch satellites. Dance in the courtyard. Chat with NASA scientists and Bay Area space innovators. This is your chance to connect with the real people and technologies shaping the future of exploration.

    A Place to Belong

At Chabot, we believe learning is lifelong, curiosity is universal, and belonging should be for everyone. As a third space, we’re committed to fostering intergenerational learning, deep connection, and the kind of wonder that lasts long after you leave the Center. We strive to provide access to resources, materials, and education in science, space, and so much more.

So, this summer, whether you’re 5 or 95, come discover your place in the universe and in our community.
