CANCELED: First Friday: Have a Ball with The Science of Spheres

January 7, 2022 @ 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Friday, January 7
CANCELED

Out of an abundance of caution, all programs are canceled through January 15. During this holiday surge in COVID-19 cases, we are taking this break to prioritize the health and safety of our visitors, staff, volunteers and community. If you purchased tickets, your tickets can be applied to other First Friday event dates. If you would like to discuss other options with our visitor services team, please contact visitorinfo@chabotspace.org.

Have a ball as we celebrate the new year and all things spherical! The night will include the return of the popular ‘The Sky Tonight’ Zeiss show in the planetarium led by the East Bay Astronomical Society, virtual reality experiences, juggling, music by DJ Brad and hands-on activities led by Chabot’s Galaxy Explorers. The night will end with a special showing of the classic laser show Pink Floyd, Dark Side of the Moon and a telescope viewing!

VR demo “Exotopia” by Scott Kildall

6:30pm-9:30pm
Studio 3

Exotopia is a virtual reality installation where visitors can explore all the known exoplanets — thousands that have been discovered in the last 20 years. Exotopia generates a universe of extra-solar worlds based on mass, proximity to their sun, orbital path, and their habitability index. They range from surreal to mundane with colorful atmospheres and clouds. Visitors to this installation can “fly” to these worlds and explore how the planets might look – from planets containing with algae-filled oceans, rocky formations, toxic clouds, icy crusts, and more. The VR experience acts as a map to future exploration of the galaxy.

Scott Kildall has been working with art + technology + education for over 15 years. He focuses on transforming data from the natural environment, such as water quality, air quality and plant data into sound installations, sculptures, and video works. He uses custom electronics to create generative, data-driven experiences with uncertain outcomes.

His artwork has been exhibited internationally at venues including the New York Hall of Science, Transmediale, the Venice Biennale, the Vancouver Art Gallery, and the San Jose Museum of Art.

He has received fellowships, awards, and residencies from the SETI Institute, Impakt Works, Autodesk, Recology San Francisco, Eyebeam Art + Technology Center and more.

He currently resides in San Francisco.
