Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover Launch Watch Party

July 30, 2020 @ 4:00 am - 5:30 am

Thursday, July 30
4-5:30 a.m.
Free
This summer, the Mars 2020 spacecraft with its Perseverance Rover will launch as part of NASA’s Mars Exploration Program, a long-term effort to explore the Red Planet. Wake up early and watch along with Chabot’s astronomers virtually as we witness this historic launch!

Astronomers from Chabot Space and Science Center will be watching along and responding to questions in the comments. We invite our community to join us for questions, conversations and celebrations of this landmark launch.

The Mars 2020 mission addresses high-priority science goals for Mars exploration, including key Astrobiology questions about the potential for life on Mars. The mission takes the next step by not only seeking signs of habitable conditions on Mars in the ancient past, but also searching for signs of past microbial life itself.

The launch is scheduled for 4:50 a.m. There is a possibility that the launch is postponed, so be sure to check back for updates. The launch period is approximately three weeks, from July 30 to August 15. The duration of the daily launch window varies from day to day. The launch windows will last approximately two hours, with a unique launch opportunity every five minutes.

When you respond that you’re going to this event, you’ll receive a notification when the watch party begins in the “Discussion” section.
