Moon Rock Dedication & Celebration
On March 3, 1969 Apollo 9 launched into space, bringing the Apollo program closer to its goal of setting people on the lunar surface, a goal later achieved in July, 1969. As part of the 50 Anniversary Celebration, NASA has dedicated a lunar sample to each Apollo astronaut to honor their contributions to space exploration. Apollo 9 Astronaut Rusty Schweickart has chosen Chabot to receive a NASA moon rock brought to earth by the later Apollo 16 mission.
Join Chabot and Astronaut Schweickart at 2 pm in the Rotunda when we officially unveil the Apollo 16 lunar sample. The day’s festivities will include lunar-themed activities and planetarium shows.
