In this latest installment of Investigating Space, we’ll learn about Earth science and oceanography through interactive, hands-on workshops and a screening of the documentary “The Lake at the Bottom of the Earth.”

The Lake at the Bottom of the World, 1:00 p.m., Theater

1 hour, 31 minutes, not rated

Chabot Space & Science Center welcomes film producer Elisabeth de Kleer and Wei Li of Lawrence Livermore Labs for a screening of this scientific expedition of Antarctica documentary plus a post-screening discussion.

An international team of scientists venture into the virtually unknown interior of Antarctica to explore a lake buried 3,600 feet beneath the ice. Their success hinges on the performance of their custom-built hot water drill and their ability to work as a team in the harshest climate on the planet. As they struggle against the ferocity of the ice and wind to unravel mysteries buried deep under Antarctica, they consider how our relationship with nature – and with one another — will impact humanity’s future and the future of all life on our rapidly changing planet.

Galaxy Explorers, Rising Sea and Ocean Acidification activity workshop, Times: 11 a.m., 2 p.m., Lab 2

Join us for a drop-in workshop featuring hands-on activities demonstrating mapping techniques to track sea level changes and explore the chemical reaction between frozen carbon dioxide and water – naturally occurring in our ocean’s ecosystems.

Rising Sea is a hands-on activity demonstrating ways to use mapping techniques to track changes in sea levels. The activity is connected to current NASA research. Learn how the effects of rising sea levels affect coastal communities and the natural environment.

Ocean Acidification is an activity that explores the chemical reaction between frozen carbon dioxide (dry ice) and water and compare this to changes that are occurring in ocean ecosystems, as excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is absorbed by the ocean.
