This festival weekend is a chance to engage your curiosity, connect with Bay Area scientists, explore your place in the future of space, and of course dance it out in our courtyard after lunch. Chabot is Oakland’s place for space, community and connection – with each other and the universe.

Chat with NASA experts, Bay Area aerospace pros, and leaders on the space tech frontier to learn about cutting-edge prototypes, real artifacts, and tech that’s catapulting us into the future.

Theater Talks

Meet an Astronaut! Space Station and Beyond with Astronaut Jeff Wisoff | 11:30AM
Explore the legacy of the Space Shuttle Program and the building of the International Space Station with astronaut Dr. Jeff Wisoff. He’ll share stories from four Shuttle flights, 20 hours of spacewalks, and helping build the ISS.
Dr. Wisoff is a physicist and retired astronaut. He later led the laser directorate at Lawrence Livermore National Lab and lives in Pleasanton with his wife, former astronaut Dr. Tammy Jernigan.

Astrobiology & Imagination: Film + Panel with Filmmaker Kelly Kowalski and Guests | 1:30PM
Join Emmy-winner Kelly Kowalski, SETI scientists, and creatives after a screening of short films Are We Alone? and The Origins of Life Here and Beyond. This lively discussion explores how storytelling shapes our understanding of the cosmos and inspires new ideas about life beyond Earth.
Kelly Kowalski translates space science into unforgettable films. Think: RadioLab meets Mary Roach.

Off-World Living in Style with Author Samuel Coniglio | 3:30PM
After 50 years of space exploration, off-world living is still like going on an extreme camping trip. Living out there is uncomfortable at best. In this engaging theater talk, explore the ideas behind Creature Comforts, a book that dives into the often-overlooked essentials that make life more enjoyable, support mental health, and bring a little fun to the final frontier. Using the analogy of building a homestead in space, author Sam Coniglio explores how early space settlers might develop sustainable lifestyles with limited resources, and what that can teach us about designing better lives here on Earth. It’s not just a vision for space living; it’s inspiration for life on this planet, too.
