Chabot Space & Science Center is a non-profit science center and observatory dedicated to inspiring and educating learners of all ages about the Universe and planet Earth. Situated on a beautiful 13-acre campus nestled in the redwoods of Oakland’s regional parks, Chabot Space & Science Center includes immersive exhibits, hands-on learning activities, science festivals, a state-of-the-art planetarium, and is home to the official NASA Ames Visitor Center. Chabot’s research-level astronomical observatory, featuring three large scale telescopes, is the largest observatory complex free for regular public viewing in the Western United States.

Marketing Manager Job Summary:

The Marketing Manager is responsible for the strategic development, execution, and evaluation of marketing initiatives across the Center’s programs and events, as well as supporting institutional branding and awareness, and general attendance promotion. The position reports to the Director of Design & Exhibits and works closely with cross-departmental teams, external vendors, and media partners to elevate the Chabot brand. This role will manage the marketing calendar and develop content across multiple platforms. The ideal candidate is a creative thinker skilled with using marketing to tell compelling, clear stories that can captivate diverse audiences. The Marketing Manager will be experienced in project management, content development, marketing, public and media relations, collaborating with designers, and visual content creation, with a passion for promoting science education and community engagement. The position requires a highly creative, collaborative, motivated individual who is experienced in their skillset, as well as flexible and resourceful in their approach, welcoming new ideas and experimentation while providing high-quality deliverables in a fast-paced environment. This is a full-time position with Monday-Friday being the regular schedule. Occasionally there will be weekends/ late nights required based on needs.

 

Duties/Responsibilities:

Develop and implement marketing strategy across the institution:

  • Create and implement a strategic plan for Chabot’s marketing across social media platforms, on and off-site marketing, and website with the goal of increasing general visitors to the museum, field trip bookings and attendance to public and earned revenue programs.
  • Develop, execute, and maintain a comprehensive marketing plan and content calendar, ensuring alignment with the institution’s goals for public programming, general admission, fundraising, memberships, exhibitions, school and group visits.
  • Collaborate with the Development team to ensure the integration and alignment of communications across all constituent groups, specifically related to quarterly direct response campaigns, monthly membership communications, business partnerships and fundraising events.
  • Ensure all marketing materials align with Chabot’s brand, mission, and voice, promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Stay informed of industry trends and emerging technologies in digital marketing, public relations, and content development.

Manage marketing initiatives and projects:

  • Oversee the creation of Chabot’s visual assets library, working with staff and contractors to capture high-quality photographs and video footage of events, programs, and exhibitions for promotional use, including editing for marketing materials, websites, and social media.
  • Manage relationships with external vendors, designers, PR agencies, and media contacts to promote events and secure press coverage.
  • Oversee the creation and distribution of marketing content, including social media posts, email campaigns, blog articles, press releases, and paid advertisements, working closely with graphic designers to develop assets.
  • Monitor and manage marketing budgets, ensuring effective use of resources across paid and earned media.
  • Coordinate promotional efforts for major fundraising events such as the annual Gala, and support cross-promotional relationships with corporate sponsors and other business partners.
  • Maintain a strong digital presence through website content management, social media engagement, and search engine optimization (SEO) best practices.
  • Lead the development and analysis of key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess the success of marketing efforts and adjust strategies as needed.
  • Work closely with the Project Manager to identify efficient workflows, protocols, and effective practices.

Contribute to a collaborative work environment:

  • Work collaboratively and cross-departmentally with volunteers, museum staff, board and community partners to contribute to an inclusive working and learning environment.
  • Encourage open communication to address concerns and promote a positive team environment.
  • Participate in mission-focused workshops and meetings to contribute ideas about how visual communication, experiences, and all departments at the Center can make an impact in Oakland.
  • Provide feedback and participate in Exhibit & Design meetings focused on exhibitions, graphic design, fabrication, experience design, marketing strategy, program development, educational impact, and content development.
  • Contribute to other tasks identified as Center wide tasks for all staff.

 

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Strong administrative skills: ability to lead, organize, delegate and ensure good communication within teams; ability to foster collaboration within internal and external teams.
  • Commit to values and contribute to an inclusive working and learning environment at Chabot Space & Science Center in workplace culture, content, and program development, hiring practices and museum experience.
  • Strong organizational skills with a focus on maintaining a well-structured content calendar and tracking marketing activities across platforms.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to create compelling narratives for a variety of audiences.
  • Demonstrated experience managing digital marketing channels (social media, email, website) and using analytics tools (Google Analytics, social media insights).
  • Familiarity with managing press relationships and securing media coverage for events and programs.
  • Knowledge of inclusive marketing practices and strategies to engage underrepresented communities in science and education.
  • Familiarity with integrated CRM systems, and content management platforms.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field or equivalent work experience is a plus.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in marketing, preferably in museums, cultural institutions, or non-profit organizations.
  • Strong track record in developing and executing creative marketing strategies for various programs and experiences.
  • Prior experience managing social media, digital marketing campaigns, and press relations in a professional setting.
  • Science Communication experience is a plus, demonstrating the ability to effectively translate complex scientific concepts into engaging content for diverse audiences
