Science Education Associate Level I

Nestled in the Oakland Hills, Chabot Space & Science Center was founded as an observatory in 1883. Today Chabot offers visitors the very latest in hands-on, interactive exhibits, displays, and Planetarium shows that explore the mysteries of the universe and of life here on earth. Chabot Space & Science Center is extremely proud of its reputation as one of Northern California’s leading centers for informal science education.

Chabot Space and Science Center seeks a part-time Science Education Associate, Level I, W-F, January – May, 2024. Core duties are to support the Field Trip program with secondary support for outreach / Learning Everywhere. Core hours are M-W 9:00am – 2:00pm with up to 15 additional hours / week for outreach programs.  

 

Science Education Associate Level I Job Summary:

The primary responsibility of a Science Education Associate is the delivery of science education content including workshops, live science shows and Learning Everywhere / outreach activities in on and off-site locations.  It includes set up and clean up but does not include major content design or curriculum development.  It is a part-time, seasonal position that collaborates with, and may report to, various departments with initial reporting to the Interim Director of Chabot’s Oakland Space Academy.

Level I Science Education Associate delivers Chabot workshops, live science shows and some off-site Learning Everywhere / outreach activities.

 

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Deliver core Chabot stand-alone educational content in on-site and off-site settings.
  • Set up and clean up from workshop, live science and Learning Everywhere / outreach sessions delivered.
  • Ensure cleanliness of storage areas, resupply materials as needed and note when supplies are running low.
  • Collaborate with volunteers assisting with activities.
  • Support Field Trip check in when not delivering 10:00am content sessions.
  • Support post-field trip floor clean up and preparation for evening events.
  • Provide floor docent support or support for other departments when specific education activities are not scheduled.
  • Participate in Chabot Team and All-Staff meetings as needed.

Qualifications:

  • At least two years post high school graduation and some college
  • Science major or strong experience in informal science education
  • Passion for science and for working with young people
  • 1-2 years work experience in formal or informal education setting
  • Strong presentation skills and presence, comfortable leading both small and large groups
  • Comfortable sharing information with groups from 4 – 18 years of age as well as with adults
  • Comfortable sharing information with people from diverse language and cultural backgrounds and diverse abilities
  • Comfortable answering questions, engaging students, and redirecting behavior – classroom management issues will be handled by the classroom teacher
  • Ability to take initiative to support education program and visitor experience in fluid museum context
  • High Level of professionalism

 

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Physical Requirements:

  • Physical stamina and the ability to lift heavy objects and be on your feet for extended periods of time.
  • Flexibility to work varied shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by the facility.

SALARY

This is a part-time seasonal nonexempt position.

Salary Range: $20-$23/ hr.
